The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), a media watchdog that monitors how GLBTs are presented, has issued a "Call to Action" against the Comedy Central cartoon program South Park, alleging that the show’s famously risque, rough-and-tumble humor has gone too far.In the Nov. 4 episode of the show, the central characters--a quartet of young friends in the third grade who live in South Park, Colorado--think that the anti-gay slur "fag" refers to noisy Harley motorcycle riders. In recent years, words such as "fag" and "gay" have become more common as generalized insults, rather than specifically anti-GLBT epithets; still, GLAAD maintains, those words retain pointed associations.
