Unity holds transgender remembrance service

Nearly 50 people attended a Nov. 19 Transgender Day of Remembrance service at Unity Church in Clearwater. It was the second such service of its kind at the church. The Transgender Day of Remembrance was created to memorialize those killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose still-unsolved murder on Nov. 28, 1998, inspired the first candlelight vigil for transgender victims of violence. Never forgetting those who have died in violent hands is just the beginning, according to transgender activist Ricki Liff.
