With 87% of the vote counted supporters of same-sex marriage are still holding out hope but Question 1, which would repeal same-sex marriage in the state of Maine, appears to be passing by 52.75%. The Secretary of State in Maine expected a 35% voter turnout and got 53% so far.
Maine was the fifth New England state to legalize gay marriage but the National Organization for Marriage, or NOM, forced a statewide vote on the issue by donating one and half million dollars in an effort to repeal same-sex marriage, which represented 63% of the total money raised by the anti-gay group Stand For Marriage Maine.
