Report: Moderate Republican drops out of NY special election

A moderate Republican has dropped out of the campaign to fill an upstate New York congressional seat vacated by President Obama’s pick to be Secretary of the Army, New York Times reports. The campaign had turned into a battle among Republicans, when conservatives refused to back the official GOP choice made by members of the district’s three county Republican committees. GOP officials picked Dede Scozzafava, a moderate who supports abortion rights and gay rights. But conservatives rebelled, bringing in their own right wing candidate, Douglas L. Hoffman, from outside the district. He was running against Scozzafava on the Conservative Party ticket, and against Democrat Bill Owens. Full story...
