Through a decisive vote in favor of the anti-bias measure, Kalamazoo last night became the 16th city in Michigan to adopt an ordinance protecting its gay, lesbian, and transgender citizens from discrimination.
It’s a vote that adds a pleasing chapter to a long history of activism in cities throughout the country over anti-discrimination measures.
Kalamazoo’s ordinance was adopted this summer by a unanimous vote of the city commission, but did not take effect because a group of right-wing activists collected enough signatures on petitions to force the measure to a public referendum. Full story...
