When votes are counted starting Tuesday evening, the eyes of most LGBT activists will be on the results from Maine where voters will decide in a ballot measure called Question 1 whether or not to overturn the law recognizing marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples in the state. A ‘No’ vote there will allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.
There will also be a few sideways glances toward the opposite side of the country where voters in Washington will weigh in on Referendum 71, which asks voters to approve or reject a law passed this year that gives lesbian and gay couples all rights and responsibilities of marriage, except for the name “marriage”.
