Defense chief talks about ‘softening’ DADT enforcement, while Congress stalls

Talking with reporters accompanying him on a trip, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said yesterday that he’s looking at ways that the military’s anti-gay “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy might be made “more humane”.

“One of the things we're looking at – is there flexibility in how we apply this law?” Gates said, according to CNN’s Barbara Starr.

He indicated that could mean, among other things, refraining from starting discharge proceedings against a service member who was outed by a jilted lover or through some form of what he called “vengeance”. Full story...
