City Controller Annise Parker is expected to face former City Attorney Gene Locke in a runoff to be the next mayor of Houston.
Political pundits had long predicted that Parker, with her strong base of inside-the-loop support, was all but a shoo-in for the runoff. Parker herself had felt just as confident, and with more than 90 percent of the precincts reporting, her confidence appeared justified.
I'm proud to have been a part of Annise's 1997 city council campaign, when she scored her first victory. I was just a generic workerkatbee (and, to be honest, I wasn't all that useful; I was really geting bogged down with law school), but I'll never forget being at one of the early organizational meetings - and of the 11 people there, a majority (6) were trans. Blame Dawn in Maine for this video- we were just talking about Arlo a few minutes ago on the phone and I mentioned that the first time I ever heard "Alice's Restaurant" was on Thanksgiving Day 1987, as I was driving back from my relative's in Amherst MA to my apartment outside Boston.
