Voters To Decide On Maine Gay Marriage

Maine residents will decide Tuesday on the future of same-sex marriage in the state. Question 1, if successful, would repeal a statute passed by the Maine legislature that legalized gay marriage last May. Anti-gay marriage group NOM (National Organization for Marriage) has contributed an estimated $1.6 million to Stand for Marriage Maine, the organization opposing the marriage statute. The contributions allowed Stand for Marriage to produce TV commercials depicting same-sex marriage being taught in classrooms—a claim vehemently denied by state Attorney General Janet T. Mills. The state ethics commission has also questioned NOM for failing to disclose its contribution list. Full story...
