Gay childrens book writer wins US recognition
Sunderland University academic Dr Elizabeth Atkinson drew international media attention with the No Outsiders project, producing anti-homophobic children's books with the aim of stamping out gay-hate taunts in school playgrounds.
The controversial books are aimed at children as young as four, and seek to represent homosexual relationships which have previously been under-represented in teaching resources.
